Install SnagBane: Docker, a Linux VPS or cPanel shared hosting

SnagBane is self-hosted software you install yourself — with Docker in minutes, on an Ubuntu VPS with Nginx, or on ordinary cPanel hosting. Requirements, steps and what runs in the background.

SnagBane is software you install on your own server — there is no SaaS version. Run it with Docker in a few minutes, on a Linux VPS, or even on cPanel shared hosting. Forms, answers and files stay in your own database. The free package installs the same way as the full package.

Requirements

ComponentMinimum
PHP8.3 or newer (pdo, mbstring, openssl, tokenizer, xml, ctype, json, fileinfo, curl; dom and gd recommended for PDFs)
DatabaseMySQL 8 / MariaDB 10.6+ (recommended), PostgreSQL 14+ or SQLite 3.35+
Web serverApache (mod_rewrite) or Nginx, with HTTPS
SchedulerOne cron job every minute (php artisan schedule:run) for reminders and clean-up

The download includes vendor/ and pre-built front-end assets — no Composer or Node.js needed on the server.

docker compose up -d --build
# open http://localhost:8080/install

The stack runs SnagBane (Apache + PHP 8.3), a background worker for emails, webhooks and integrations, the scheduler, MariaDB and Mailpit for testing email. There are no default database passwords: the installer replaces the starting password with a random one, and MariaDB's root password is random too.

Ubuntu VPS with Nginx

Install Nginx, PHP 8.3-FPM and MariaDB, unzip SnagBane to /var/www/snagbane, point Nginx at its public folder, get a certificate with certbot, add the cron line — then open /install.

cPanel / shared hosting

Create a MySQL database and user in cPanel, upload and extract the zip with File Manager, point the (sub)domain's document root to SnagBane's public folder, open /install and follow three steps: requirements, database, admin account. Add one cron job and you're done.

On Windows for a trial

The documentation also describes running SnagBane locally on Windows to try it out.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a cloud version?

No. SnagBane is only software you install, so your data never leaves your infrastructure.

How long does installation take?

With Docker, a few minutes. On cPanel, about as long as creating a database and uploading a zip.

Is the free package limited in time?

No. The Free plan has no time limit and no licence key.

See Requirements and the install guides in the documentation, or download SnagBane.
